Who are the Lost Birds?

If you have Native American ancestors, there is a chance that you may have a hard time locating information about one or more of your relatives. People in your family may refer to these mysterious folks as “Lost Birds” and they may be unable to provide you with any information about them because they have had as difficult of a time locating that information as you have. The story of the Lost Birds is a tragic one. During the 1940’s and 1950’s, the Child Welfare Association and the Bureau of Indian Affairs got together and began a program of removing … Continue reading

Lost Parrot Talks His Way Home

When I was a little kid, my parents made a game out of teaching me my home address and phone number. We turned it into a little song — to this day, I could still sing you my address and phone number! I didn’t know it at the time, but this is important info for a little kid to know. For most pets, ID tags do the talking when it comes to name and home address. In fact, wearing tags is the number one way to make sure a lost pet is reunited with its family! Unless you’re Yosuke the … Continue reading

The Desperate Mom’s Guide to Spring Break

Are the kids inside and bored and the weather just isn’t co-operating during spring break? I know what you mean. Although I’ve been trying to push the birdies out of the nest to play outside, it is just too cold here. Add to that the fact that our spring break is really short this year (only three days off), and you have the potential makings of disappointed kids. Sure, we could just throw money at the problem, but then again, that wouldn’t be very frugal. Despite these challenges, I am happy to report that the feedback I got from my … Continue reading

Now’s the Time to Prune!

Deck the halls with loads of branches! It’s pruning time again. Actually, you can prune many different sorts of plants at many times of the year. What we’re talking about is winter pruning. Winter time is a quiet time for plants. Many deciduous plants have already lost their leaves and have gone dormant. This means that they are no longer actively growing and making food. Winter pruning means that you prune trees and shrubs while they are dormant. If you prune deciduous trees and shrubs in the winter, this will help them grow more in the spring. Winter pruning reduces … Continue reading

Setting Up A Sit Spot

In a few minutes, we’ll head out for the evening. We’ll walk up the hill to a place about ten minutes away, and there we will sit in the forest and listen. We’ll listen, we’ll look, and we’ll just relax. These are my most relaxing ten minutes of the day, and they are a wonderful bonding time with my daughter. We’ve created a sit spot, a tradition that I’m hoping to continue on throughout the summer months. A sit spot is just that: a spot where you sit. It’s a lot more than that too. By going to a place … Continue reading

History Comes to Life Through Reenactments

Today I met an interesting individual who, among other things, has a very active interest in the Civil War. Many Americans, including myself, have ancestors who fought in the Civil War. Today I learned a little bit about how the history of the war that our ancestors fought comes to life every year through Civil War reenactments. The gentleman that I was speaking with today has been a part of many Civil War reenactments and they are a staple of his summer vacation plans each year. Historic battles like Gettysburg and Fort Sumter are reenacted by passionate folks who truly … Continue reading
