What are Your 2013 Genealogy Resolutions?

Typically, a New Year’s Resolution involves a goal that you intend to work toward in order to improve your life in the year ahead. Have you ever made a genealogy related New Year’s Resolution? If so, are you working on it, (or have you already given up that goal)? In the time that I have been writing for the Genealogy blog at Families.com, I’ve made a couple of genealogy resolutions at the start of the year. So far, I have completely abandoned all hope of achieving each one of them rather quickly, and have yet to reach those goals (whatever … Continue reading

23andMe is a company that offers a DNA test kit. Genealogists can use it to learn more about their heritage. Everyone can use it to learn about their health. 23AndMe is among the groups asking for the FDA to approve their test kits. A Vampire Tragedy

I have several friends that have gotten all wrapped up in the “Twilight” series of books and movies. Team Edward and Team Jacob comments are thrown around on Facebook and many lament the end of the series with the upcoming The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, which comes out on November 16th. Now it seems as if the saga may not be the only thing ending. For what seems like years, the stars of the movie, Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson, have denied being in a relationship, despite the love between their on screen personas. Well, let me … Continue reading

Keeping Our Kids Safe

As a parent, we always worry that something will happen to our children. We try to anticipate any situation they could be in that could be harmful and help them avoid it. We give them tools to keep themselves safe. Sadly sometimes, it’s not enough. When you are a single parent keeping your child safe becomes even more of a challenge. Due to only being one person and having to work, you are not able to supervise as much as you would like to, you can’t always be there, just a shout away if they need you. Recently in my … Continue reading

Start With Yourself – And Go From There

I recently decided to start working on my family tree. Since this isn’t something I can devote a lot of time to, I am doing it in “baby steps”. This week, that step is to see if I can find a copy of my birth certificate. I’ve heard it is good to start your research with yourself, and work from there. Sometimes, there is a strange synchronicity between what I am working on, and what life brings me. Last week, I decided to begin working on my family tree. There is a piece of advice that has been passed around … Continue reading

Our Broken Family Tree

As Memorial Day approaches I have spent a lot of time thinking about those that have gone on before me. I have always had a very close family and have fond memories of spending time with both my grandparents and great-grandparents as a child; the latter of which have since moved on. It is often difficult to look at a family tree that has since been broken by divorce. My son’s family tree isn’t quite as clean cut as I would like it to be. It gets rather complicated after about the first branch, but I still want to be … Continue reading

Hidden Chronicles Has a Little Genealogy

Have you heard of a game called Hidden Chronicles? It is one of the many games produced by Zynga that can be played through Facebook. I’ve noticed that there is a little bit of genealogy sprinkled through this particular game. Genealogists might want to check it out when they have a few moments to spare. Zynga is a company that makes a variety of online games. Some of them can be played on the Zynga website, and many can be played through Facebook. No matter which Zynga game you choose, there is one dynamic that is common to all of … Continue reading

Elizabeth Warren Really Does Have Cherokee Ancestry

Elizabeth Warren is a Democrat who is a candidate running in the 2012 United States Senate election in Massachusetts. She is running against incumbent Scott Brown, who is a Republican. There have been some accusations that she used a false claim of minority status to advance her career. A genealogist has found evidence that Elizabeth Warren really does have Cherokee ancestry. For whatever reason, it has somehow become acceptable for politicians to question the heritage of the candidates who are running against them. I’m not entirely certain what they hope to achieve by these efforts, but it happens fairly frequently. … Continue reading
