A Growing Family

My daughter recently got married, I think I’ve touched on it before. It’s a new world for me, this empty nest thing. Hailey and I have been alone for such a long time, a little family island unto ourselves. Now, I have a son in law and she has a husband. Our family is pretty spread out, we are in Utah and most of our relatives are on the east coast. Holidays are usually spent with friends. Now Hailey’s family has expanded in ways I never even thought about. Today we went to a baby shower for Hailey’s sister in … Continue reading

Wedding Photos Tell Family Stories

Wedding photos are important. People spend thousands of dollars on hiring a photographer and purchasing the photos that he or she takes of their wedding. Genealogists know that those photos are a great source of family history and family stories. In the mail today, I got something that I had been looking forward to. It was a small package of photos that I ordered from the photographer who my sister hired to take photos at her wedding. Somehow, I managed to wait until the last minute to make this purchase. I guess time got away from me. Looking over the … Continue reading

Get Creative With Baby Pictures

Baby pictures are a treasured part of any family’s photo collection. In fact, most people are photographed more during their first year of life than at any other time. Your family’s baby photo collection is certainly a treasure that you will want to preserve for future generations. Baby photos are good for many things other than just the standard photo albums, too. If you would like, you can bring your family’s baby photo collection to life with a scrapbook that tells the stories of all of the babies in the family from a particular generation. For example, I am one … Continue reading

Good Neighbor – A Magazine Ad from State Farm

We are all inundated with advertisements. Insurance companies have learned to be clever with the types of ads they produce. State Farm has created an advertisement that appears, at first glance, to be a magazine. It got my attention. I just got back from a week long vacation (that included a family wedding). It amazes me how many different forms of advertisements I have seen in that span of time. Most of the ads were unmemorable, and I forgot about them the instant they went away. The airline pilots rattled off a sales pitch to the passengers about a credit … Continue reading

Connecting Genealogy and Scrapbooking

It seems to me that if you have an interest in genealogy, you might also have an interest in creating scrapbooks. Both hobbies center around important family events, such as birthdays and weddings. As you continue your genealogy research, you may come across family photos that you had not seen before, as well as old photos of your ancestors. It seems natural to combine these two hobbies, in order to create a spectacular family album. Part of the fun of making a scrapbook is that you get to relive the memories from the days the photos were taken. You get … Continue reading

Scrapbook Memorial

Scrapbooking is all about special memories and times you cherish and want to hold onto forever. Most scrapbookers are very selective on the photos they choose down to the embellishments to bring about just the right emotion on a page. We want our pages to pop with life and evoke the same memory we had that day. You will see scrapbooking about babies, school years, weddings, and holidays. Yet, one can commemorate another life event through scrapbooking; death. This is not a morbid thought. It is a celebration of a loved one’s life and memories for all to share. When … Continue reading

Digital Photo Danger

Luckily this post isn’t a sob story about losing all of the photos of my child because they were on my computer which got stolen, stopped working, exploded, deleted them, etc. I’m fairly tech-minded but I’ve got to tell you that it took me a while to really think the issue of digital photos through enough for me to come to my senses. When I look back at photos our wedding and our honeymoon I instantly realize how important these images are. They take us back to a time when things were different. Probably not better but certainly worth remembering … Continue reading
