Planning an Extended Family Reunion

One of the things about genealogy is that it brings together distant family lines. One great thing to do with your genealogy research is to have a family reunion. There are family reunions that focus primarily on immediate family or a set of cousins and then there are family reunions that focus on generations of a family line. These types of family reunions function much differently.

If you are interested in having a family reunion that focuses on generations of a family line, you should begin by seeing if there is a similar interest with others who have done the genealogy. If there is you can begin coordinating a date for the reunion that will at least allow the group of you to get together.

Once you do this you should begin advertising for the reunion. This can be done both through your family and on your website, so that you have the opportunity reach distant relatives. It can be helpful to choose one person that stands out in your line and then say a reunion for the descendents of that particular person.

When you pick a particular person it is much easier to plan the activities. You can have a speaker focus on that particular persons life. You can also plan to fill in a pedigree chart so that people can figure out how they are related to each other. It may be helpful to have someone put in charge of each of this person's children's descendents. This can make breaking up into groups easier and handling the planning of the events easier.

You will want to plan activities that relate to genealogy as well as activities that allow you to socialize and make contacts to exchange information on research. A dinner with a speaker is a good start. Then you can have a few activities the next day. If you are planning this as a whole family event you should be sure to plan children's activities as well. There will be follow up blogs to planning a successful family reunion.
