History and Hauntings in New Hampshire

Families with roots in New England may have American roots that date back quite a few generations. New England was one of the first places in America to be settled by Europeans, so many of the first families of European descent to live in America made their homes there. Fortunately, the history of New England is very well preserved in museums, books, monuments, and other forms of historical memorabilia. If your family has roots in New England, particularly in New Hampshire, you may find it interesting to know that there are walking tours where you can explore the lore and … Continue reading

Family History and Breast Cancer Risk

It is almost October, and while many of us associate October with orange and black, October is also a very pink month. October is breast cancer awareness month, and breast cancer risk has been shown to be associated with family history, among other things. I knew that there was a connection between family history and breast cancer risk but I did not know exactly how it worked so I decided to find out. Some cases of breast cancer are associated with mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene. These genetic mutations do not guarantee that a person will develop breast … Continue reading

Family Heirlooms: The “Stuff” of Genealogy

I was talking to my mom on the telephone the other day, and she brought up something that I had not really thought too much about before. We were discussing family heirlooms, and how some families have more than others because of when and how their ancestors arrived in America. For example, my mother’s paternal ancestors have been in the United States for quite some time. I believe that they arrived before the Civil war. Her maternal ancestors, however, did not come to America until her maternal grandmother came from Italy through Ellis Island with her family, My genealogical math … Continue reading

October is Family History Month!

I just discovered something new about October, and it’s not another birthday. October is family history month, and there are many things that you and your family can do to celebrate your heritage. Sometimes it may be a challenge just to get everyone in your home around the table for dinner, let alone get through dinner without someone getting a phone call, text, or other distraction that gets in the way of sharing a … Continue reading

Family Travel: Dolls, LEGO and Blues

Could the Mall of America get any better? American Girl fans answered yes and mall officials listened. Come November (just in time for the holidays) American Girl will call the massive shopping center home. Which means your kids have one more location to blow their allowance money on the mega-popular dolls and their mountains of accessories. The new store is making headlines because, according to company execs, American Girl is very selective about where it sells its goods. Company reps say the American Girl store in the Mall of America will span 20,000-square feet, feature two stories and include a … Continue reading

Family Travel: Time To Stop and Smell The Roses

We spent a marvelous Mother’s Day touring our local botanical garden (mom’s got in free) and I’m not sure who had a better time the moms or the kids? When my 3-year-old daughter wasn’t trying to see which was taller—her or the tulips—she was sticking her face into every blossom and bush making sucking noises with her mouth. After a while she worked through her nose-mouth issues and declared everything smelled: “Bee-you-tah-ful!” I plan to take her back to the gardens in a few weeks when the roses will be in full bloom. After all, June is known as the … Continue reading

A Little Bit of History: Walt Disney Studios and Disneyland

“My only hope is that we never lose sight of one thing, that it was all started by a mouse” – Walt Disney Walt Disney created an empire. It’s as simple as that. While he always stood behind his quote that it was all started by a mouse, Walt was the man behind the mouse, and the man who started it all. The company which is today one of the biggest media and entertainment corporations in the world began with a small studio, which he ran with his brother, Roy. This small animation studio was founded in October of 1923. … Continue reading

October was a bit of a slow month, but the topics covered were very interesting and they were written by Catherine Ipcizade and Heather Long. They covered everything from learning to read to trick-or-treating. Catherine’s main topics are Food and Weight Loss, and she does a great job in those two as well.
