Excited For A Family Reunion

In a little less than a month, I will be attending the first family reunion that I have attended in a long time. It is definitely the first one that I will attend with my two boys. I am excited about making the trip to Connecticut to see my mother – in – law’s family. That is the group of people who are reuniting. My mother – in – law’s maiden name is Blake, so it is the Blake family reunion. Interestingly enough, the two youngest attendees at this reunion have the family name incorporated into their names. My husband’s … Continue reading

Genetic Testing Can Shake a Family Tree

It is generally presumed that the man who is married to your ancestor’s mother is, in fact, his biological father. The same assumption is made about the parents of your living relatives. People who work in genetics find that about 10% of people are not really the biological child of the man that they call Dad. This information could really shake up someone’s family tree! One of the things I like best about Facebook is that I get to read the fascinating news articles that my friends post to their pages. I am lucky to have friends who frequently post … Continue reading

My Struggles with My Body and My Self-Image

I have a confession to make…I absolutely hate to have my picture taken. So I will avoid it at all costs. In fact, every time I am tagged in a photo on Facebook, I immediately untag it. I don’t appreciate being put out there without permission. Okay, that’s not really what it’s all about. It is my inability to accept my body image. Because of my extreme disliking to having my photo taken, I have bypassed two opportunities in the past several years for my family to receive a free 8×10 portrait, compliments of the church I attend. You see, … Continue reading

Changing My Name

By now I’m sure that you can tell that feminist issues are a very big deal for me. It even took a bit of coaxing from my parents for me to walk down the aisle with my dad; I did it for him, because it was important to him, but I don’t like the idea of being passed off from one man’s hands to another. Yet one thing about my decisions related to my married life really stands out: I took my husband’s name. I’ll admit it rankled a little, just the idea that I erase a part of myself … Continue reading

The Addiction of Facebook

I never thought this day would come…that my oldest son would take the Facebook plunge. But he did it. It wasn’t until he joined the ranks that I truly realized how addicting it can be. I know this might sound pretty trivial. Big deal, so your teenager finally joined Facebook…they do it every day. But you would have to know my son to realize how out of character this is. He has always protested when I encouraged him to join in. Honestly, the only reason I did that is because I so enjoy the connection it affords between me and … Continue reading
