Genealogy “Luck” Stories

Genealogy is a hobby that seems like it could be mostly straightforward and methodical. However, there is much room for serendipitous situations and genealogists delight in sharing their stories of strange but true things that have happened in the course of their genealogy research. I think that part of the reason why genealogists love to share and read stories of impossible sounding circumstances under which genealogical information has been discovered is that it gives every genealogist a source of hope that the answers that they seek are out there, somewhere, waiting to be uncovered albeit possibly in a very different … Continue reading

Online Genealogy Newsletters

If you enjoy genealogy, you may be interested in knowing that there are at least two great genealogy email newsletters that you can sign up for. Subscribing to a genealogy newsletter or two can help you to learn more about genealogy without having to wait for a research question to come up in your mind. As the newsletters regularly appear in your email inbox, you will be able to stay up to date with what’s happening in the world of genealogy. The two genealogy newsletters that I found today are both very interesting. Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter has two options … Continue reading

Combining Genealogy and Gardening

I’m sure that I am not the only one that has memories of gardens from their childhood home and the homes of other relatives, such as grandparents. I distinctly remember my mother’s garden as well as my grandmother’s garden. My mother had beautiful irises growing along one side of the garden. There was a giant patch of rhubarb in the garden, and sometimes as a special treat, she would give my sister and me a stalk of it and a little sugar to dip it in. We also had some vegetables. The gardens at my grandmother’s house were mostly flower … Continue reading

What Genealogy Can Teach Children

Those who truly love a certain subject or hobby usually enjoy talking about it to other people. If genealogy is your favorite activity, then you may find it both fun and inspirational to show your children a little bit about what you like about genealogy. There are many academic lessons that tie nicely into aspects of genealogy. Genealogy itself could be a great subject to be taught as part of a homeschooling curriculum. Genealogy is the study of your relatives, your ancestors, your family. These people are all related to your children, as well. Children may become really interested in … Continue reading

Genealogy and Family Ghost Stories

Occasionally, your genealogy research will reveal a “skeleton” in the family closet. Sometimes, if you are lucky, your genealogy research can uncover a family ghost story. It is things like these that make genealogy so interesting! Part of the fun in documenting a family ghost story is discovering clues of it’s veracity. Just make sure you are recording it the right way. It is not unheard of for a family to hide, or to stop talking about, a family member that caused a scandal. Perhaps a baby was born “out of wedlock”, or maybe an ancestor suffered from a mental … Continue reading

Is it Serendipity or is it Psychic Genealogy?

When many people think about genealogical research, they are likely to think of people conducting a methodical search through various types of records in search of information about their ancestors. Genealogical research does involve a lot of organization and planning, and most of the time the tried and true methods of research are used repeatedly to lead the researcher to the records that they seek. Sometimes, though, things happen during the course of genealogical research that seem to defy explanation. For example, during your search for one ancestor, you find another ancestor that you previously did not know existed. Or, … Continue reading

Connecting Genealogy and Scrapbooking

It seems to me that if you have an interest in genealogy, you might also have an interest in creating scrapbooks. Both hobbies center around important family events, such as birthdays and weddings. As you continue your genealogy research, you may come across family photos that you had not seen before, as well as old photos of your ancestors. It seems natural to combine these two hobbies, in order to create a spectacular family album. Part of the fun of making a scrapbook is that you get to relive the memories from the days the photos were taken. You get … Continue reading

Do You Need a Genealogy Research Miracle?

If you have hit a brick wall in your genealogical research and you think that you have tried everything to break through it, think again. Miracles can happen in any part of your life, including your genealogical research. Today, I learned about a group of kind-hearted genealogists that perform random acts of genealogical kindness for family history researchers that are in need of a little assistance. Once a month, each of these generous individuals is willing to donate the time that is required to complete one genealogical research task in their geographic area. If you are fortunate enough to be … Continue reading

The Importance of Grandparent Relationships

My grandparents got home from Australia this week. They have been serving an LDS mission in Brisbane, Australia over the last two years and we were lucky enough to get the opportunity to pick them up from the airport on Monday. Logan was only two when they left. He frequently talked with them on Skype, but that was his only real memory of them up to this point. He warmed up quickly during the ride home, but what impressed me so much was the fact that the moment they walked off the plane my grandmother was already taking advantage of … Continue reading
