Destination Weddings: Do or Don’t?

Writing about Disney Cruise Weddings/Vow Ceremonies made me think about destination weddings.  Given that I wanted my wedding to be as small and simple as possible, it’s difficult for me to relate to those interested in having a destination wedding. For me, the concept only seems to make sense if the bride or the groom actually hails from the area in which they’re getting married.  Maybe he or she was born abroad, or on the other side of the country.  It’s one thing to ask your guests to spend a lot on travel expenses just because you want to get … Continue reading

Season of Love

According to the marquee on our local bridal shop, wedding season is officially here. Spring is primetime for nuptials, and I’m sure my local scrapbook shop will be echoing the bridal boutique’s sentiments just as soon as it sells out of its Easter merchandise. Weddings are among the most popular events to scrapbook and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why. Getting married is a life-altering moment that most people enjoy reliving. Having a memory book to display all of the special parts of the extra-special day is a gift that keeps giving. In addition to the photos … Continue reading

Weddings Change Kinship Terms

Weddings are special. This is one occasion where you can expect to see plenty of relatives. For genealogists, weddings are an opportunity to figure out the proper kinship terms for complex family relationships. How do all of these people relate to you? Less than a week ago, my sister, Mary, got married. She had a beautiful, somewhat traditional, ceremony, and I have never seen her happier. I hope that the happiness that she experienced on her wedding day continues to grow with every year of her marriage. Each couple will put together a wedding that is uniquely special to them. … Continue reading

For The Love of Weddings

Genealogists love weddings. Attending a wedding is a joyful event in and of itself, but for genealogists, it holds the promise of making new connections and unearthing new information about the happy couple and the families that are joining together as a result of their union. Weddings provide a wonderful opportunity to get to know the new additions to the family and catch up with relatives that you may not have seen in a while. Weddings have come a long way since our the days of our ancestors’ ancestors. Early marriages were sometimes a result of capture, not of choice. … Continue reading

Weddings with a Difference

Recently I came across several weddings with a difference. The first one is for dogs. No, I am not kidding! I wish I was. What is our world coming to when we can have things like doggie weddings? For $5000 you can have a doggie wedding for your pet, complete with weddings gown. I love our two dogs but this whole idea is so sick. To me it is making a mockery of marriage and all it should mean. In the second wedding in an effort to make it a bit different, the bride to the astonishment of nearby fishermen, … Continue reading

What is Love? Part 2

Yesterday we looked at the idea that love is shown practically in the day to day outworking of the marriage relationship. So, is it worth expending all that time and energy? Yes it is. ‘Love is everything it’s cracked up to be. That’s why people are so cynical about it…It really is worth fighting for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don’t risk everything, you risk even more,’ said Erica Jong. I have to agree. Those who aren’t prepared to risk themselves and be vulnerable for love are missing out on a lot. Real love isn’t dependant … Continue reading

Before Disaster Comes Show Your Love

Australia is reeling. A staggering number of lives have been lost as a result of the bushfires that have been rampaging for days. Whole towns have been wiped out. Many people have lost their homes and possessions in the worst disaster to hit Australia as bush fires rage through parts of Victoria. Fires have also hit New South Wales but to date no lives have been lost there. Other than the lives of loved ones, what would you try and save in case of a fire? It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it? As I started to think about what I’d … Continue reading

Weddings: Putting All That Planning Into Perspective

I’m conducting an experiment. Want to be a part of it? I’m trying to figure out how important all that wedding preparation ends up being. I got the idea back when my mom moved in with us earlier this year. I had to clean out the closet in what became her room so she’d have a place to hang her clothes. I ended up finding several wedding-related items. My wedding dress was in there. I knew it was in one of the closets, but if you’d asked me which one I wouldn’t have been able to tell you. I also … Continue reading

Celebrity Weddings: Who Did and Didn’t Get Married This Weekend

Contrary to Australian news reports, hunky actor Orlando Bloom didn’t make it to the altar with his gorgeous girlfriend Miranda Kerr this weekend. Relax ladies; Bloom isn’t off the market just yet. Though, that’s not what the Australian media is reporting. Earlier today several publications in “the land down under” claimed that the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star and his model girlfriend got engaged on Thanksgiving and exchanged wedding vows yesterday. But just a few hours ago Kerr’s rep issued this statement: “The story … is completely false and misleading. Miranda herself has clearly stated she is not engaged. There … Continue reading

New to Marriage Blog but Not to Marriage

I’m popping in to say, ‘Hi’ and feeling excited to be joining Courtney on the marriage blog. My husband and I have been married for over 40 years, so hopefully I’ve learned something about marriage in that time to share with you all. Since May 2007 I have been writing in the Christian area and popping in for the occasional guest movie review. A number of my blogs in Christian have covered marriage. You can check some of them out below. Much of my life involves writing. I’m fortunate to have a husband who fully supports me. He thinks I … Continue reading
