During the 1940’s and 1950’s, the Child Welfare Association and the Bureau of Indian Affairs got together and began a program of removing … Continue reading

Coming Soon – The Peopling of America Center

Today, I came across an interesting way that Americans can support the work of the Statue of Liberty – Ellis Island Foundation while at the same time making their family a part of an interactive exhibit that will eventually appear both in person at Ellis Island and online. The Flag of Faces is a part of an expansion project at Ellis Island called “The Peopling of America Center”. The goal of the Statue of Liberty – Ellis Island Foundation in adding the Center to the existing Ellis Island Immigration Museum is to preserve the history of the American Experience, an … Continue reading

Don’t Fall For A Genealogy Scam

While you may think that genealogy is a noble pursuit and that scammers would steer clear of targeting a group of people that tends to be meticulous and skeptical (things that serve us well in our research, mind you), there are genealogy-related scams out there. They also know that beginning genealogists are eager to find out as much information as they can as quickly and easily as possible, so they may incorporate that knowledge into their … Continue reading

Recording Genealogy Research in Books

When I first realized the importance of genealogical research, I wanted a book in which to record my research data and notes. I started with a three-ring binder and page protectors. I put everything that I had pertaining to my family tree in the binder. I had articles on how to build a family tree that I had clipped from magazines. I put those together in sleeves and added a tab divider to keep them organized. Next, I added handwritten notes that were given to me by my grandparents. The notes contained names and dates of some of our ancestors, … Continue reading

Family History – Are You Doing It?

I have a deep and abiding love of genealogy. The very first time I ever felt the Spirit prompt me – the prompting that lead me to sitting down with the missionaries – was when I learned that families could be sealed together for all eternity. It should be no surprise that, on my first trip to the LDS bookstore I ever made, I immediately purchased genealogy software. As a college student, I spent a lot of my free time researching my ancestors. I made a lot of mistakes starting out that I’ve had to go back and correct, but … Continue reading
