Fewer People are Getting Married

One of the most important documents that genealogists search for are marriage records. Locating that kind of record is a good way to confirm some of your research. Future genealogists may have problems with this, though, because it seems that fewer people are getting married. Genealogists who are working on their family tree spend a great deal of time attempting to locate copies of certain types of official documents. They look for birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage certificates. One can learn a lot of important information about his or her ancestors from these types of documents. Sometimes, though a … Continue reading

What Lessons Did I Teach

What has divorce taught our children about love? I worry about what my divorce has taught Hailey about love and marriage. Unfortunately, most of the people she knows have been divorced, at least once. What does this teach our kids? When I was growing up all of my friends parents were married, my grandparents, aunts and uncles, were all married, to their original spouses. The only divorced person I knew was my mother. It’s the opposite for Hailey, she knows hardly anyone with an intact family. There are a few here and there but it seems they are the exception … Continue reading

Naming Your Baby

You may not think of genealogy as something that is affected by trends. However, there are some trends that your descendants will be talking about long after the trends have come and gone. Why? Because trends for baby naming become part of the information that is recorded as part of your family’s history. Naming a baby is no small task. Each set of parents must decide what kinds of things are important to them when selecting their children’s names. For example, is there a favorite relative whom you would like to honor by choosing their name as a child’s first … Continue reading

Tax Refund Loans

Tax time is fast approaching. We have not filed yet. I’m starting to get antsy about it. I know we still have a month and a half. I know that we have an extra few days to file by April 18. I’m still feeling anxious that we haven’t bought TurboTax or started compiling our documents. I’m rather looking forward to it this year. I sold hardly any Avon, so I don’t have much to compile there and I’ve never made any money at it. About half my income last year is W-2 reported instead of all of it on a … Continue reading

Is Marriage Irrelevant?

In the USA fewer adults are married. I would dare to suggest the situation would probably be similar here in Australia. Fewer people are getting married, with many choosing to live alone, or to live with a partner but outside of an official marriage situation. According to a Time magazine survey, almost half of these interviewed have lived with or are currently living with a partner without being married. Does this mean marriage has become irrelevant? Apparently not! Of the total of people involved in the research, 46 percent wanted to get married. Of these 64 percent were already living … Continue reading

Planning a Wedding – Things to Consider

Reading the forums recently it seems some people are planning weddings and looking for ideas. Here are some things to think about. These are not from our wedding – that was way too long ago. But from our daughter’s wedding and other recent weddings. 1. Guests The number of guests and how to accommodate them all is often an issue. What follows is a good solution. When our daughter was married they had a garden wedding. The garden did have a marquee available if it was needed, but it was a brilliantly sunny day. I’m sure a lot of prayer … Continue reading
