There are certain organizations that require you to produce a pedigree chart in order to join. One of these organizations is the Daughters of the American Revolution. In order to become a member you have to prove your genealogy, This includes the specific marriage, death and birth certificates back through your line. Your ancestors have to have been a part of a certain group and served either in the military when the United States first fought for independence or be part of one of the groups that helped with the fight.
The Daughters of the American Revolution provides many services to the community. One example of these are the scholarships that are provided. You do not have to be a member of DAR to apply for the majority of the scholarships and they cover a wide variety of disciplines of study.
Another service that is available is the DAR Library in Washington D.C. This library is focused on genealogy work and has a wide collection of on site databases as well as books and other information. The library is free for members of DAR, but the public can access it by paying $6.00 per day. If you are in the D.C. area the library is worth visiting, particularly if you are interested in furthering your genealogy work. They also have many special collections available to look at.
The process to joining DAR is complex because of the amount of genealogy work you will need to do. Additionally you have to find acceptable sources that will document your lineage. However, you can contact the DAR and they can help you find a local chapter that will assist you in your research. This organization is open to people regardless of their race or their creed. If you are interested in becoming a member visit their website. You can also learn more about the library if you are interested in visiting to learn more about your genealogy.
