Star Wars the Old Republic Game has Family Tree

You might not expect a video game to have anything to do with concepts of family. Often, though the MMORPGs do have quite a lot of detail about the family trees of certain, important, in game characters. The new Star Wars game might be the first to connect the characters of players into a family tree. Video games have come a long way since the days when your choices were Mario or Luigi, and your goal was to collect coins, and finish the level before the time ran out. Video games today have detailed story lines that include a history … Continue reading

Obscure Disney History in “Epic Mickey”

Who are you again? “Epic Mickey” was a video game that, while enjoyable, suffered from multiple problems. One of them was that it perhaps catered to too narrow of an audience. It was chock full of Disney history – and I mean old school, black and white short cartoons Disney history – but it was a video game. How many gamers also get a thrill from references to Mickey’s most obscure cartoon companions? I imagine that there isn’t too much of an audience overlap. Of course that’s not to say that no one enjoys the two; the game’s developer himself … Continue reading

Genealogy and Family Heirlooms

In addition to passing on the stories and genealogy of a family, it is often common to pass on family heirlooms. Although these items may or may not be of great monetary value, the real value is passing on the story and tradition that comes with the object. It is important to work to preserve both the heirloom and the stories surrounding it. One great way to display heirlooms is to create a shadow box for it. For example if you have an old tea cup from a china set or an old lace handkerchief, both of these items could … Continue reading

Organizing the Family Room (4)

Time to get through all that old media and the plethora of family games. Are you with me? Let’s get everything organized and ready for the new year. Here is the list we have been working through for the family room: Books Magazines Video tapes and DVDs Cassettes, CDs and records Games If you have upgraded to new media, such as a DVD player instead of a VCR, if you never listen to all of the records you might still have, then consider giving your nostalgic collection away to someone who could appreciate it. Cassettes, CDs and records: If you … Continue reading

What’s New at Ancestry.com? – Week of June 16, 2012

Ancestry.com is, quite possibly, the most popular genealogy website out there. People who have no interest in genealogy can recognize the name Ancestry.com. There has been some talk about the potential of Ancestry.com going up for sale. I don’t have an update about that, however, I do have information about some of what is new at Ancestry.com lately. Right now, Ancestry.com is offering free access to their War of 1812 collection. This free access is going to end on June 30, 2012. So, if you haven’t gotten around to check it out yet, keep in mind that your days of … Continue reading

Take an Online Genealogy Course

Would you like to learn more about a particular aspect of genealogy? There is probably an online course that you can “attend” that will teach you what you want to know. Many of them do not require you to apply to a particular college or university in order to take the class, and some of them are offered for free. Family Tree University is not, technically, an accredited university. It is the name that Family Tree Magazine has given to its learning center. The online classes that genealogists take through FTU will enable them to learn a lot about a … Continue reading

Connecting Genealogy and Scrapbooking

It seems to me that if you have an interest in genealogy, you might also have an interest in creating scrapbooks. Both hobbies center around important family events, such as birthdays and weddings. As you continue your genealogy research, you may come across family photos that you had not seen before, as well as old photos of your ancestors. It seems natural to combine these two hobbies, in order to create a spectacular family album. Part of the fun of making a scrapbook is that you get to relive the memories from the days the photos were taken. You get … Continue reading

Journal Writing

A journal is a great resource for genealogy. It is also a great resource for putting together your family history. As you read journals you learn about daily life, big events as well as small ones. It is a chance to really see inside someone’s mind. As you read other people’s journals you may learn things that you want to add to your own journal writing or it may inspire you to begin writing your journal. As you write in your own journal you should be aware that it may be read by others at some point. This does not … Continue reading

Competing With Reality Television

Now, I don’t want to seem like a crabby snob—I confess that I have been tempted by certain reality television programs and have snuck a peak or two in my weak moments. There are a few programs that I’d have to confess are somewhat of a guilty pleasure. BUT, as a parent, I think that reality television has taken misrepresenting the “real world” for our kids to new heights. Where we used to have sitcoms and dramas and soap operas like “Dallas” to try to convince kids that this is how the real world lived, at least a parent could … Continue reading
