Words that have been Turned into Baby Names

What will you name your baby? That question is one that most parents take very seriously. Much consideration goes into choosing a name for a newborn. It is understandable that parents want their child to have a unique name. Perhaps this is why many parents in 2014 selected a random word as the name for their babies. Nameberry took a close look at the names parents gave to their babies in 2014. They put together a list of baby names that are words. In short, parents chose a commonly used word, that has a specific meaning, as the name for … Continue reading

Cthulhu AllSpark is not a Good Baby Name

How did you decide upon the perfect name for you son or daughter? Many parents choose names that have been handed down in their families from one generation to the next. Others pick names that are popular in the year the baby was born. One couple decided to break with tradition and ask “the internet” to select a name for their baby girl. Poor thing almost got named Cthulhu All-Spark! How did this very unique name get suggested? It didn’t come from either of her parents! Stephen McLaughlin, a software developer, decided to ask the Reddit community to suggest some … Continue reading

Most Unusual Baby Names of 2012

It has become unsurprising when celebrities choose to give their babies an odd sounding name. What isn’t so expected is when people who are not famous choose to give their babies a name that is unique (and bordering on bizarre). BabyCenter.com has a list of the most unusual baby names of 2012. Genealogists who have been working on their family trees quickly notice that some names have been in the family for generations. It is also common for parents to choose a name for their baby that was inspired by popular culture. Some parents intentionally choose to give their daughters … Continue reading

Most Popular Pet Names of 2012

One thing we see a lot of this time of year is lists of baby names: the top baby names for the year, and names that are projected to be popular in the coming year.  What we don’t expect to see are studies of a different sort of name: dog names.  But that’s just what MSN did, compiling a list of the top puppy names for 2012. A familiar name tops the list: Bella.  It’s been a popular female dog name since 2006, thanks to the “Twilight” craze.  I can attest to that; Chihiro was originally named Bella when we … Continue reading

Uma Thurman’s Daughter Has Seven Names

Parents give a lot of thought to the name that they will give their children. Typically, a child will be given a first name, a middle name, and a surname (which may or may not contain a hyphen). Celebrities tend to give their children unusual names. Uma Thurman gave her daughter seven names. In many families, there are certain names that are handed down from one generation to another. In my family, we have a lot of people, on both sides of the family tree, who are named James. It is common for new parents to name their baby after … Continue reading

A Backyard Mystery

This past weekend, I went to Maine for a vacation. One day as I was driving between Belfast and Unity, I saw two headstones in a corner of someone’s front yard. The stones looked very old, and they probably are, as burials in residential yards are not very common any more. Seeing the headstones in someone’s front yard made me wonder how common it is for people to have old graves on their property. As I looked around online, I came across an interesting story out of Tennessee. Apparently, a man was doing some landscaping in his yard and he … Continue reading

Excited For A Family Reunion

In a little less than a month, I will be attending the first family reunion that I have attended in a long time. It is definitely the first one that I will attend with my two boys. I am excited about making the trip to Connecticut to see my mother – in – law’s family. That is the group of people who are reuniting. My mother – in – law’s maiden name is Blake, so it is the Blake family reunion. Interestingly enough, the two youngest attendees at this reunion have the family name incorporated into their names. My husband’s … Continue reading

A Family Outing Part II

Seeing the monkeys through the glass up close and personal was a really neat experience for our son. He had never been that close to monkey before but he wanted to see them without the glass as well. The monkey exhibit was one of the larger exhibits (I guess monkeys need more room to play). My husband put our son back on his shoulders and they looked at the monkeys from every possible angle until our son was ready to move on to a different exhibit. I did not think that the next exhibit would be the excavator working on … Continue reading

Online Resources for Baby Names

There are a couple of things that parents can expect when they are expecting a baby, whether it is their first or their fourth. Expectant parents can expect to be bombarded with inquiries about the baby’s gender until either an ultrasound provides the news and the parents share it or the parents inform the inquisitors that they do not want to find out until baby is born, so they will just have to wait right along with them. Once baby’s gender is known, the next round of questioning begins – have you chosen a name? Anyone who has had or … Continue reading

Naming Your Baby

You may not think of genealogy as something that is affected by trends. However, there are some trends that your descendants will be talking about long after the trends have come and gone. Why? Because trends for baby naming become part of the information that is recorded as part of your family’s history. Naming a baby is no small task. Each set of parents must decide what kinds of things are important to them when selecting their children’s names. For example, is there a favorite relative whom you would like to honor by choosing their name as a child’s first … Continue reading
